About Us

The Law Offices of Richard J. Washington is a litigation practice focusing on Labor and Employment, Criminal Defense, and Civil Rights.

Labor and Employment

We have extensive experience representing clients in labor cases, on both management side and union side. We assist organizations and institutions in negotiating collective bargaining agreements, separation agreements, and employee manuals. We have defended employers against allegations of discrimination and sexual harassment. We have also represented employers in disciplinary matters seeking a wide-range of penalties.

Additionally, our office has represented hundreds of public employees in disciplinary cases, New York City Department of Investigation interviews, and interrogations from New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. We have represented employees from numerous city agencies, including but not limited to: The New York City Police Department, The New York City Fire Department, The New York City Department of Education, The New York City Parks Department, The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, The New York City Human Resources Administration, The New York City Department of Transportation, and CUNY.

Criminal Defense

We have represented individuals accused of both misdemeanor and felony crimes in both state and federal court, and litigated hundreds of criminal cases from arraignment to trial. We have tried numerous criminal cases to verdict. Our criminal representative matters have included criminal trespass, unlawful possession of marijuana, driving under the influence, narcotics possession and sale, and weapons possession.

Civil Rights

A false arrest or a wrongful termination often could have civil rights implications.  We have experience litigating claims at both the state court and federal court levels.  Our civil rights practice is focused on wrongful arrest, unlawful search and seizure, and excessive force.  We have also helped our clients bring claims against their employers for discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, sex and/or gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, military status, and other protected categories.
